Eye drops could make fuchs surgery less invasive

NCT ID NCT05275972

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares two surgical approaches for Fuchs endothelial dystrophy, a condition that clouds the cornea. One is a full corneal transplant (DMEK), the other is a simpler procedure that removes only the diseased cells (DSO) plus Ripasudil eye drops to help healing. 60 participants will be randomly assigned to one of the two treatments. The goal is to see if the simpler surgery with drops can achieve similar vision improvement to the transplant.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Ripasudil (eye drops)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a less invasive surgical option for Fuchs dystrophy, reducing recovery time and risks while maintaining good vision.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with only 60 participants. The drops may not work as hoped, and the less invasive surgery might not provide lasting vision improvement.
