Frailty may be key to predicting surgery survival in the very old
NCT ID NCT07440095
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study examines whether frailty and simple blood tests can predict which patients aged 80 and older are most likely to die within 30 days after major abdominal surgery. Researchers will review records of 100 patients to see if a frailty index and lab markers like albumin and hemoglobin offer better risk prediction than standard methods. The goal is to improve surgical decision-making and pre-surgery care for the oldest patients.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors better identify which very elderly patients are at highest risk after major abdominal surgery, leading to more informed decisions and possibly pre-surgery strengthening programs.
What could go wrong
This is a small, retrospective study (100 patients) from a single hospital, so results may not apply to all older adults. It only looks at risk factors, not a treatment.
