Sound wave therapy shows promise for arthritis inflammation

NCT ID NCT06555562

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tested whether a non-invasive ultrasound device can reduce inflammation in people with inflammatory arthritis (psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or ankylosing spondylitis). Sixteen participants received four sessions of focused ultrasound or a sham (placebo) treatment. The main goal was to see if ultrasound could lower levels of inflammatory markers in the blood. This is an early-stage study focused on understanding the body's response, not on treating symptoms.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

focused ultrasound stimulation

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a non-drug way to control inflammation in arthritis.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early study in healthy volunteers and people with arthritis. It only measures short-term changes in blood markers, not actual symptom improvement. The results may not lead to a treatment.
