Sound waves vs. seizures: new ultrasound trial for Hard-to-Treat epilepsy
NCT ID NCT06292494
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether focused ultrasound can safely reduce seizures in people with drug-resistant epilepsy. Twenty adults who have not responded to at least two seizure medications will receive ultrasound treatment to interrupt brain circuits causing seizures. Researchers will monitor seizure frequency, brain activity, and side effects to see if this non-invasive approach works.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
focused ultrasound (Exablate 4000 device)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a non-invasive way to reduce or stop seizures in people with drug-resistant epilepsy, potentially reducing the need for medications.
What could go wrong
This is a small early-phase study with only 20 participants, so results may not apply widely. The treatment may not work for everyone, and there are risks like temporary side effects from the ultrasound.
