Brain scans may replace invasive electrodes for epilepsy surgery planning

NCT ID NCT06059157

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether advanced MRI scans can accurately identify the brain networks responsible for seizures in people with drug-resistant epilepsy. Participants, who are already scheduled for invasive electrode monitoring, will receive an additional hour-long MRI. Researchers will compare the MRI results with the electrode findings to see if the scans can reliably guide surgical decisions.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Advanced MRI (resting-state functional MRI, diffusion imaging, myelin mapping)

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could help doctors pinpoint seizure origins in the brain without invasive electrode implants, guiding more precise and effective epilepsy surgery.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage imaging study with 80 participants. The MRI technique may not match the accuracy of the gold-standard invasive method, and results may not apply to all epilepsy patients.
