Rest between sets: the secret to stronger workouts without the pain?
NCT ID NCT07679971
First seen Jul 01, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026
Summary
This study looks at how different rest intervals between sets of flywheel resistance exercise affect muscle damage and performance in men who haven't done strength training in the last six months. Participants do a single session of lower-body exercises with either 1, 2, or 3 minutes of rest between sets. Researchers measure changes in muscle strength, soreness, swelling, and blood markers over several days to see which rest period leads to the best recovery and performance.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
flywheel resistance exercise with varying inter-set rest intervals
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could help design more effective and safer resistance training programs by identifying optimal rest intervals to minimize muscle damage while maximizing performance.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study in untrained men only, so results may not apply to women, trained individuals, or other exercise types. The outcomes are indirect markers of muscle damage, not direct measures of injury or recovery.
