Glowing probe aims to improve brain tumor diagnosis
NCT ID NCT07286903
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing a new fiber optic probe that combines three technologies (fluorescence, Raman spectroscopy, and ultrasound) to help doctors see tumor tissue and blood vessels during brain biopsies. The probe will be tested on brain tumor tissue removed from 20 patients with high-grade glioma. The goal is to see if the probe can accurately identify tumor margins and blood vessels, which could make biopsies safer and more likely to get a good sample.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
5-ALA (a drug that makes tumor cells glow)
What this could lead to
If successful, this probe could make brain tumor biopsies safer and more accurate, reducing the need for repeat procedures.
What could go wrong
This is a very early, small (20 people) ex-vivo study testing the probe on removed tissue, not yet in live patients. The technology may not work as well in real-time surgery.
