Dental filling showdown: which technique keeps your fillings intact longer?
NCT ID NCT06183320
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested two ways of placing a flowable bulk fill composite in class II cavities (fillings between back teeth). 38 patients received two fillings each, one with the flowable composite exposed at the edge and one not. Researchers will check for restoration loss, staining, and other issues over 5 years to see which technique works better.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Flowable bulk fill composite (Opus Bulk Fill Flow APS) and incremental composite (Vittra APS)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show dentists the best technique for using flowable bulk fill composites in back tooth fillings, potentially making fillings last longer and reducing staining or loss.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 38 patients, so results may not apply to everyone. The study compares techniques, not a new treatment, so no major breakthrough is expected.
