A new topical treatment may spare teeth from root canals
NCT ID NCT07751016
First seen Aug 06, 2026 · Last updated Aug 07, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This Phase 2 trial tests whether a topical drug called KH001 can preserve the pulp (nerve) inside teeth with deep cavities. Adults with deep dentinal caries will receive either KH001 or a placebo applied to the cavity. The study tracks how many people develop irreversible pulpitis or pulp necrosis, and whether the dentin thickens, to see if KH001 can avoid the need for more invasive treatments.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- KH001, a topical drug applied to deep cavities
- What this could lead to
- If successful, KH001 could offer a way to treat deep cavities without needing root canals, preserving natural teeth.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-stage trial with only 36 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The drug could also cause allergic reactions or fail to prevent pulp damage.
