Manikin study tests which breathing tube works best in tight spots

NCT ID NCT06609499

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This completed trial tested two different airway devices (a standard gum elastic bougie and a flexible-tip bougie) for intubating a simulated trapped patient with a neck injury. Fifty experienced paramedics each tried both devices on a manikin in a confined space. Researchers measured how fast and how easily each device allowed successful intubation and ventilation. The goal is to find which tool works best when access to the patient's airway is difficult.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Flexible-tip bougie and standard gum elastic bougie (both devices used for intubation)

What this could lead to

If one device proves faster or easier, it could become the preferred tool for paramedics intubating trapped patients, potentially improving emergency airway management.

What could go wrong

This was a small manikin study with 50 paramedics, not real patients. Results may not translate to actual emergency settings or different patient types.
