Could a simple scope replace general anesthesia for cancer surveillance?

NCT ID NCT06848868

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This pilot study is testing whether a flexible camera (ureteroscope) can be used under local anesthesia to check for cancer recurrence in the upper urinary tract after kidney-sparing surgery. Ten adults who have had such surgery will undergo the procedure in an outpatient setting. The main goal is to see if the scope can fully view the kidney and ureter, and to track complications and patient comfort.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

flexible ureterorenoscopy (a thin, flexible camera tube inserted into the urinary tract)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that surveillance with a flexible scope under local anesthesia is safe and feasible, potentially reducing the need for general anesthesia.

What could go wrong

This is a very small pilot study with only 10 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The procedure may still cause discomfort or complications, and it is not yet proven to be better than standard care.
