New suction tool may speed up kidney stone surgery
NCT ID NCT07377461
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested a new type of ureteral access sheath with a flexible tip and built-in suction during kidney stone surgery. Fifty adults with kidney stones 10 mm or larger were randomly assigned to receive either the new suction sheath or a standard sheath. The main goal was to see if the new device reduces surgery time, with secondary goals including complications, hospital stay, and stone clearance.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Flexible and Navigable Suction Ureteral Access Sheath (FANS) device
What this could lead to
If successful, this device could make kidney stone surgery faster and more efficient by improving visibility and removing stone fragments more effectively.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with only 50 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The device is a tool, not a cure, and benefits may be modest.
