First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study tested a decision aid designed to help older adults with early dementia or depression think about safer ways to store firearms at home. Only 5 people took part, and the study was ended early. The goal was to see if the tool was practical and acceptable, and whether it led to any improvements in safe storage habits.

What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a practical tool to help families and doctors discuss firearm safety with older adults who have memory or mood problems.
What could go wrong
This was a very small pilot study (only 5 participants) that was terminated early, so results are limited and may not apply to a broader population.
