Cash for quitting: new study tests financial rewards to stop smoking in pregnancy
NCT ID NCT07528664
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether giving financial rewards to pregnant women who smoke—and to their smoking partners—helps them quit. About 180 pregnant women and their partners will be split into three groups: one where only the woman gets money for quitting, one where both get money, and a control group with no financial incentive. The goal is to see if rewarding both partners leads to more smoke-free months during pregnancy, reducing health risks for the baby.

What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, effective way to help pregnant women and their partners quit smoking, improving health for both mother and child.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study (180 participants) and hasn't started yet. Financial incentives may not work for everyone, and long-term quitting success is uncertain.
