Fetal balloon procedure tested for rare birth defect

NCT ID NCT07166172

First seen Sep 30, 2025 · Last updated Apr 29, 2026 · Updated 23 times

Summary

This study looks at a procedure called FETO, where doctors place a tiny balloon in the windpipe of a fetus to help lungs grow in babies with a severe diaphragmatic hernia (a hole in the muscle that separates the chest and belly). The goal is to see if this surgery helps more babies survive to leave the hospital and have fewer health problems up to age 2, compared to standard care. About 80 pregnant women will take part, and their children will be followed for 24 months.
