Poop pills? fecal transplants tested for liver disease
NCT ID NCT06478602
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This completed Phase 3 trial tested whether fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) could help people with liver cirrhosis. Nineteen patients received FMT via colonoscopy. Researchers measured liver stiffness and signs of brain confusion (hepatic encephalopathy) one month later. The goal was to see if changing gut bacteria could ease cirrhosis complications.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
fecal microbiota transplantation
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a new way to manage liver cirrhosis by improving gut health.
What could go wrong
This is a very small completed trial with only 19 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The approach is still experimental and carries risks like infection or complications from colonoscopy.
