New guidelines aim to cut unnecessary antibiotics in febrile babies
NCT ID NCT07134751
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether a new, simpler guideline can safely reduce the number of tests, antibiotics, and hospital stays for infants under 2 months old with a fever. Researchers will compare hospitals using the new guideline to those using standard care. The goal is to find out if the new approach can identify serious infections without overtreating the many infants who are not seriously ill.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to safer, more efficient care for febrile infants, reducing hospital stays and antibiotic overuse.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. The new guideline may not prove safer or more effective than current practice, and results may not apply outside Sweden.
