Gut feeling: fasting diet trial targets depression in bowel disease

NCT ID NCT05382897

Summary

This study tested whether a special plant-based, low-calorie 'fasting mimicking' diet could help reduce depression symptoms in people with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis (IBD). 42 adult participants with mild-to-moderate depression tried three cycles of the 5-day diet. Researchers measured changes in mood, gut bacteria, and body chemistry to see if this diet could be a safe way to improve mental health for people with IBD.
