Fasting diet may boost recovery after colon cancer surgery
NCT ID NCT05384444
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether a short-term, low-calorie diet called a fasting mimicking diet (FMD) can help patients recover better after surgery for colorectal cancer. The diet is given in cycles after the operation and is designed to be easier to follow than complete fasting. Researchers will track whether the diet improves survival and reduces cancer recurrence in 602 patients with stage III colorectal cancer.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
fasting mimicking diet (low-calorie, low-protein meal plan)
What this could lead to
If it works, this diet could become a simple, safe way to improve recovery and reduce cancer recurrence after colorectal cancer surgery.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study with no prior data in this specific setting. The diet may not improve outcomes, and some patients may find it hard to follow or experience nutritional side effects.
