Eye scans may foretell diabetes vision loss and heart trouble
NCT ID NCT07417410
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This observational study will follow 1,000 people with type 2 diabetes for one year to see if changes in the eye's blood vessels and tissues can predict worsening diabetic retinopathy and related heart problems. Researchers will use advanced imaging and medical records to track eye health and major cardiovascular events like heart attack or stroke. The goal is to better identify who is at risk, so doctors can intervene earlier.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors identify which patients with diabetes are at highest risk for vision loss or heart problems, allowing earlier and more personalized care.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It may find patterns that are not strong enough to reliably predict outcomes, and results may not apply to all patients.
