Can exercise tame atrial fibrillation? trial tests workouts on heart rhythm and fitness
NCT ID NCT04508478
First seen Sep 21, 2026 ยท Last updated Sep 21, 2026
Summary
Researchers at National Taiwan University Hospital are testing how different exercise programs affect people with atrial fibrillation. Participants take part in aerobic training, resistance training, or a control physical exercise program. The study measures heart rhythm over 14 days, cardiopulmonary fitness through exercise tests, and body composition using scans. The goal is to see whether structured exercise changes heart burden, muscle metabolism, or body makeup in this population.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- structured exercise training programs, including aerobic and resistance training
- What this could lead to
- If exercise training helps, it could offer people with atrial fibrillation a low-cost way to improve heart and lung fitness and daily function alongside standard care.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small study of 8 people, so results may not apply broadly. Exercise can trigger irregular heart rhythms in some patients, and the trial excludes people with unstable heart conditions.
