Can a Clot-Removal procedure turn the tide in severe stroke?

NCT ID NCT07090941

First seen Aug 11, 2026 · Last updated Aug 14, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This trial is investigating whether adding a clot-removal procedure, called endovascular treatment, to standard medical care can improve outcomes for people who have had a severe stroke caused by a blockage in the basilar artery, a major vessel at the back of the brain. The study includes adults with a large area of brain damage who can be treated within 24 hours of symptoms starting. Participants are randomly assigned to receive either standard care alone or standard care plus the procedure, and their level of disability is measured after 90 days to see if the procedure helps them recover better.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Endovascular treatment (a procedure to remove the clot from the blocked artery in the brain)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could establish a new standard of care for a severe type of stroke, potentially improving recovery and reducing disability for many patients.
What could go wrong
The trial is still in progress, and the procedure carries risks such as bleeding or vessel damage. It may not prove more effective than standard care alone.
