New ultrasound technique could replace needle biopsy for liver patients
NCT ID NCT06513195
First seen Jun 08, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a special ultrasound done through an endoscope can measure how well beta-blockers are working in people with cirrhosis and high blood pressure in the liver. Twenty-four participants will get the ultrasound before and after three months of treatment with carvedilol. The goal is to see if this less invasive method matches the standard pressure measurement done through a vein in the neck.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Carvedilol (a non-selective beta-blocker)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a less invasive way to monitor treatment response in cirrhosis patients with portal hypertension.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study with only 24 participants. The procedure is still experimental and may not replace standard methods.
