New equation could simplify salt monitoring for kidney dialysis patients

NCT ID NCT05955417

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study aims to create and test a new mathematical formula that estimates how much sodium (salt) people on peritoneal dialysis consume. The researchers will enroll 30 adults who have been on peritoneal dialysis for at least three months and have no remaining kidney function. If the equation proves accurate, it could offer a simpler way to monitor dietary sodium without relying on patient recall or food diaries.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this equation could help doctors better manage sodium intake in peritoneal dialysis patients without needing detailed diet records.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 30 participants, so the equation may not be accurate for all patients or in different settings.
