Could a common diabetes pill help hearts heal after a heart attack?
NCT ID NCT07621380
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether the diabetes drug ertugliflozin, started within 72 hours of a first heart attack, can improve heart function in people with type 2 diabetes. About 476 adults will be randomly assigned to take the drug or receive standard care. Researchers will measure changes in a heart stress marker (NT-proBNP) and heart pumping ability over 26 weeks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ertugliflozin (a diabetes drug that lowers blood sugar and may protect the heart)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a new standard treatment to protect the heart after a heart attack in people with type 2 diabetes.
What could go wrong
This is a phase 4 trial, so the drug is already approved for diabetes, but its benefit for heart attack recovery is unproven. Risks include genital infections and ketoacidosis.
