Heart attack drug combo may unclog arteries when standard methods fail

NCT ID NCT04573751

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This completed trial tested whether giving epinephrine and verapamil directly into the heart arteries could help restore blood flow in heart attack patients whose vessels remain blocked despite standard treatment. 104 adults with ST-elevation heart attacks were enrolled. The study compared standard therapy alone versus adding epinephrine, verapamil, or both.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

epinephrine and verapamil (given directly into the heart arteries)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could give doctors a new way to restore blood flow during a heart attack when standard treatments fail.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed trial with 104 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The drugs can affect blood pressure and heart rhythm.
