Spinal stimulation trial aims to restore movement and bladder control after injury

NCT ID NCT04879862

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is testing whether epidural stimulation—a device placed near the spinal cord—can improve walking, standing, and bladder function in people who have had a spinal cord injury within the past year. Sixteen participants will receive stimulation combined with stand training. The goal is to see if this approach can help them take steps and better manage urination.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

epidural stimulation

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a way to help people with spinal cord injuries regain some ability to stand, walk, and control their bladder.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 16 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The intervention involves surgery and electrical stimulation, which carry risks like infection or discomfort.
