First seen Jul 01, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026

Summary

This trial tests a program called ENCompaSS that combines education, phone coaching, and self-management tips to help Veterans with long-term back pain. Participants are randomly assigned to either the program plus usual care or usual care alone. The study measures whether the program reduces how much pain interferes with daily life, sleep, and other activities over 12 months.

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

ENCompaSS pain care program (education, navigated care, and supported self-management)

What this could lead to

If successful, this program could offer a non-drug way to help Veterans with chronic back pain feel better and get back to normal activities.

What could go wrong

This is a behavioral program, not a cure. Results depend on individual engagement, and the program may not work for everyone or be easy to scale.
