New procedure aims to stop brain bleeds from coming back
NCT ID NCT04923984
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This Canadian study is testing whether blocking a small artery in the brain's lining can prevent chronic subdural hematomas from returning. The procedure, called middle meningeal artery embolization, uses tiny particles or coils to cut off blood flow to the bleeding area. Researchers will follow 1,000 patients to see if this approach reduces the need for repeat surgeries and improves recovery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Embolization procedure (microparticles, liquid embolic agents, or coils) to block the middle meningeal artery
What this could lead to
If successful, this procedure could lower the chance that a subdural hematoma comes back, reducing the need for repeat surgeries.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a randomized trial, so results may be less definitive. Risks include allergic reaction to the embolic agent or procedural complications.
