Heat waves against cancer: new trial tests hyperthermia for rectal tumors

NCT ID NCT07372300

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This phase 3 trial tests whether adding modulated electro-hyperthermia (mEHT) to standard treatment helps shrink locally advanced rectal cancer. About 126 adults will receive either standard therapy alone or with mEHT twice a week for six weeks. The goal is to see if the heat-based treatment improves tumor down-staging and complete response rates.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

modulated electro-hyperthermia (mEHT) using the Oncotherm EHY-2030 device

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a way to shrink rectal tumors more effectively before surgery, potentially improving outcomes and reducing recurrence.

What could go wrong

This is a mid-stage trial with only 126 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The added hyperthermia could cause discomfort or skin burns, and it may not improve response over standard therapy.
