New EBV vaccines enter human safety trials
NCT ID NCT06908096
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests two experimental vaccines against Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which causes mono and is linked to cancers. Researchers will give 750 healthy adults aged 18-29 three shots over several months to check for side effects and immune response. The goal is to find a safe vaccine that could prevent EBV infection.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
EBV gH/gL/gp42-ferritin nanoparticle vaccine with or without gp350-ferritin, both with ALFQ adjuvant
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a vaccine that prevents Epstein-Barr virus infection and its complications, like mono and certain cancers.
What could go wrong
This is an early Phase 1 trial focused on safety, so it's too soon to know if the vaccines will work. Side effects are possible, and the results may not lead to a licensed vaccine.
