Vital signs alert could save lives in blood cancer care
NCT ID NCT06409767
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether using a simple early warning score (NEWS) to quickly move high-risk blood cancer patients to the ICU can reduce deaths and organ failure. Over 2,200 adults receiving intensive chemotherapy or stem cell transplants will take part across ten hospitals. Half the hospitals will use the warning system; the other half will continue usual care.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
National Early Warning Score (NEWS) monitoring with ICU referral
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that closely monitoring vital signs and acting early saves more lives in blood cancer patients undergoing intensive treatment.
What could go wrong
This is a large trial but it tests a monitoring strategy, not a new drug. The benefit may be small, and early ICU admission could increase anxiety and resource use without improving survival.
