Tiny viruses, big impact? study links infant virome to lung disease in preemies

NCT ID NCT07487259

First seen Mar 29, 2026 · Last updated May 04, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study looks at whether the types of viruses found in the lungs and gut of very preterm babies (born before 30 weeks) influence their risk of developing bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a serious chronic lung disease. Researchers will collect throat and stool samples from 40 babies over the first three weeks of life and compare those who develop BPD to those who don't. The goal is to better understand the role of the virome in BPD, which could lead to new ways to predict or prevent the disease.
