Could a Radiation-Free MRI replace risky scans for kids with cancer?

NCT ID NCT02415816

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether a special MRI technique called diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI-MRI) can safely and accurately stage sarcomas in children without using radiation. 98 children with bone or soft-tissue sarcomas received DWI-MRI scans, and researchers compared the results to standard scans that use radiation. The goal was to see if DWI-MRI could one day replace some of these higher-risk imaging methods, reducing children's lifetime exposure to radiation.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could replace some radiation-based scans with safer MRI for children with sarcomas, reducing long-term risks from radiation.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage imaging study, not a treatment trial. It may show that DWI-MRI is not accurate enough to replace current methods, and results may not apply to all hospitals.
