Can a light device or a smart toothbrush beat gum disease in seniors with memory issues?
NCT ID NCT07166224
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares three oral hygiene routines in 90 adults aged 60+ who have gum disease and mild cognitive impairment. One group uses a special light device (Lumoral) plus a manual toothbrush, another uses a powered toothbrush (Oral-B iO), and a control group uses a manual toothbrush. Over six months, researchers will measure plaque, gum bleeding, pocket depth, bad breath, and quality of life to see which approach works best.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
dual-light antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) device (Lumoral) and Oral-B iO powered toothbrush
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that simple home-use devices can improve gum health and quality of life in older adults with memory problems.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 90 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The improvements may be modest and not lead to long-term benefits.
