Summary
This study looked at whether doxycycline, a common antibiotic, can prevent spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) in people with cirrhosis. SBP is a serious infection of the belly fluid. The study included 841 adults with cirrhosis who were at risk for SBP. Researchers compared doxycycline to standard treatments to see if it worked just as well at preventing SBP and was safe.
