Could a Parkinson's drug help Depression-Related lack of motivation?
NCT ID NCT05909267
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study explores whether a single dose of L-dopa, a drug used for Parkinson's, can improve motivation and motor function in people with major depression who have signs of low-grade inflammation. Researchers will compare L-dopa to a placebo in 165 participants (patients and healthy controls) using tasks that measure reward-seeking and walking speed. The goal is to understand if inflammation-related dopamine changes contribute to symptoms like anhedonia and sluggishness.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
L-dopa/Carbidopa
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could point toward a treatment for motivation and movement problems in depression linked to inflammation.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study with a single dose, not a treatment trial. Results may not lead to a new therapy, and L-dopa can cause side effects like nausea or dizziness.
