Could an MS drug fix a brain chemical problem in schizophrenia?
NCT ID NCT06957808
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether diroximel fumarate, a drug already used for multiple sclerosis, can increase levels of the antioxidant glutathione in the brains of people with schizophrenia. Thirty participants will take the drug for two weeks, then be randomly assigned to continue the drug or switch to a placebo for another two weeks. Researchers will use brain scans and EEG to measure changes in glutathione and related brain activity.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Diroximel fumarate (also known as Vumerity)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could point toward a new treatment target for schizophrenia by increasing brain antioxidant levels.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very early, small study (30 people) testing a short-term effect on a brain chemical, not symptoms. The drug may not change glutathione or improve outcomes.
