Can a nudge or a coach keep people engaged with mental health apps?
NCT ID NCT05555875
First seen Sep 02, 2026 · Last updated Sep 03, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital are testing whether automated motivational messages or coach support can improve engagement with SilverCloud, a digital mental health intervention for depression and anxiety. The trial enrolls adults with clinically significant symptoms who are patients in the Mass General Brigham primary care system. Participants use the app, and some receive extra prompts or coaching. The study measures how long people stay engaged and how often they use the intervention.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Digital mental health intervention (SilverCloud) with optional automated motivational messages and coach support
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could point toward simple ways to keep people engaged with digital mental health tools, potentially improving depression and anxiety outcomes.
- What could go wrong
- The trial is small and early, and it focuses on engagement rather than symptom improvement, so even positive results may not translate to better mental health or apply to broader populations.
