Can a hormone pill shrink painful ovarian cysts?
NCT ID NCT07770594
First seen Aug 18, 2026 ยท Last updated Aug 18, 2026
Summary
This trial tests whether a daily dienogest tablet can shrink endometriomas (ovarian cysts caused by endometriosis) and ease period pain better than a combined oral contraceptive pill. Women aged 18 to 40 with symptomatic endometriomas will take one of the two treatments for three months. Researchers will measure changes in cyst size via ultrasound and pain scores using a visual analog scale.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Dienogest 2 mg tablet or a combined oral contraceptive pill (ethinyl estradiol 30 mcg + desogestrel 150 mcg)
- What this could lead to
- If dienogest works better than the pill, it could become a preferred non-surgical option for shrinking endometriomas and reducing pelvic pain.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, three-month study, so results may not be conclusive or apply to everyone. Both treatments can have side effects, and the trial does not yet prove long-term benefits.
