Can a hormone drug shrink painful ovarian cysts better than the pill?
NCT ID NCT07763847
First seen Aug 13, 2026 · Last updated Aug 14, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether elagolix, a hormone-blocking drug, can shrink endometriomas (ovarian cysts caused by endometriosis) and ease severe period pain better than the combined birth control pill. Women aged 18-40 with symptomatic endometriomas (2-5 cm) will take either elagolix 150 mg or a birth control pill daily for three months. Researchers will measure changes in cyst size via ultrasound and pain scores using a visual analog scale.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- elagolix (a hormone-blocking drug) compared with a combined oral contraceptive pill (ethinyl estradiol and desogestrel)
- What this could lead to
- If elagolix works better than the pill, it could offer a new non-surgical option for shrinking endometriomas and reducing severe period pain.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, short-term trial (60 women, 3 months), so results may not last or apply broadly. Elagolix can have side effects like bone thinning and liver issues.
