NCT ID NCT04971889

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests two group-based nutrition programs for 291 African American women with type 2 diabetes who are at risk for complications. One group gets standard diabetes nutrition education, while the other adds motivational interviewing exercises. Both programs run for 3 months with biweekly sessions, followed by a maintenance session and then 6 months of no contact. Researchers will measure changes in blood sugar control (HbA1c) and body mass index to see which approach works better.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Diabetes medical nutrition therapy (group-based dietary self-care sessions) with or without motivational interviewing

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that culturally tailored nutrition and motivational support help African American women better manage their diabetes and lower complication risks.

What could go wrong

This is a behavioral study, not a drug trial, so results depend on participant engagement. It may not produce large or lasting changes in blood sugar control.
