Can a common sedative give ICU patients real, restful sleep?

NCT ID NCT06824077

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 02, 2026 · Updated 34 times

Summary

This study tests whether a medication called dexmedetomidine can help patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) sleep more restfully. About 50 adults who are awake and stable in the ICU will receive either the drug or a placebo for two nights. Researchers will measure sleep quality with a portable device and check if patients feel more alert the next day. The goal is to see if this approach is practical for a larger future study.
