Could a common steroid make gallbladder surgery recovery less painful?

NCT ID NCT07182110

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether adding dexamethasone (a steroid) to a standard numbing injection (TAP block) can improve pain control after laparoscopic gallbladder removal. About 100 adults will receive either the standard numbing medicine or the numbing medicine plus dexamethasone. The main goal is to see how long it takes before they need additional pain relief.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

dexamethasone added to bupivacaine (Marcaine)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a better way to manage pain after gallbladder surgery, reducing the need for strong painkillers.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial, so results may not be conclusive. Adding dexamethasone may not provide meaningful extra pain relief and could carry rare side effects like allergic reactions.
