New study tests safer pain relief for kids having hand surgery

NCT ID NCT07474909

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study looks at whether giving the steroid dexamethasone near the nerves or through an IV can safely make pain relief last longer in children having hand or forearm surgery. About 150 children will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: dexamethasone near the nerve, dexamethasone through a vein, or a placebo. The researchers will check for nerve damage and pain levels over a year to find the safest and most effective approach.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

dexamethasone

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide a safer, longer-lasting way to manage pain in children after hand or forearm surgery, reducing the need for opioids.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 150 children, so results may not apply to all. There is also a small risk of nerve injury from the injection itself.
