3D-Printed hand braces could be cheaper and just as effective

NCT ID NCT07633821

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares 3D-printed hand orthoses (braces) to traditional custom-made ones in 100 adults with chronic hand conditions from nerve, muscle, or bone issues. The goal is to see if the 3D-printed versions work just as well for daily activities, are more satisfying, and cost less. Participants will use the brace for 4 months, and researchers will measure function, pain, and quality of life.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

3D-printed hand orthosis

What this could lead to

If successful, 3D-printed orthoses could become a cheaper, faster alternative to custom-made ones, improving access for people with chronic hand conditions.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial (100 participants) comparing non-inferiority, so results may not apply broadly. The 3D-printed devices might not match the fit or durability of conventional orthoses.
