Anesthesia showdown: which drug is kinder to the optic nerve?

NCT ID NCT07359508

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This completed Phase 4 trial looked at how two common anesthetics—desflurane and propofol—affect the optic nerve sheath diameter (a measure of pressure around the eye) in 146 adults undergoing laparoscopic gallbladder removal. The goal was simply to observe differences between the two drugs, not to treat any disease. The study provides knowledge about anesthetic effects but does not aim to cure or control a condition.
