Default option nudge may boost cancer screening in High-Risk groups

NCT ID NCT07682220

First seen Jul 02, 2026 · Last updated Jul 02, 2026

Summary

This trial tests whether presenting a cancer screening appointment as a pre-selected default option (opt-out) makes people at high risk for lung or stomach cancer more likely to accept it, compared to a standard opt-in approach. Participants complete an online questionnaire and decide about a simulated screening appointment. The study also examines how people feel about being nudged once the tactic is disclosed.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Default option nudge (behavioral intervention)

What this could lead to

If effective, this simple scheduling change could boost cancer screening rates in high-risk populations, potentially catching more cancers early.

What could go wrong

This is a simulated online study, not real screening. Real-world behavior may differ, and some people may react negatively to being nudged.
