Simple alert may uncover missed lung disease in clot survivors
NCT ID NCT03729544
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a pop-up alert in the electronic health record could remind doctors to screen for a rare but serious lung condition called chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) in patients who previously had a blood clot in the lungs. The trial involved 400 adults at one hospital who had symptoms like shortness of breath or fatigue. Half of the doctors saw the alert; the other half did not. The goal was to see if the alert increased the number of heart ultrasound tests ordered and CTEPH diagnoses made within three months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this alert system could help doctors catch a treatable lung condition earlier in patients who have had a pulmonary embolism.
What could go wrong
This is a small, single-center study testing a computer alert, not a new drug or treatment. The alert may not change how often doctors order tests or lead to more diagnoses.
