Heart scan showdown: CT vs. MRI for detecting hidden damage

NCT ID NCT06029400

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is testing whether a CT scan can do the same job as an MRI for looking at heart muscle damage and scarring. MRI is the current gold standard but is slow, expensive, and not suitable for everyone (e.g., people with pacemakers or claustrophobia). The researchers will enroll 2,200 people who already need a heart CT for other reasons and will follow them for years to see if the CT findings can predict future heart problems like heart failure or death.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could make heart tissue analysis faster and more accessible, potentially improving diagnosis and risk prediction for heart disease patients.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It may not prove CT is as good as MRI for all patients, and results might not change current practice.
